"Our every strike there is a drama . . . Every strike has a story."

The combative traditions of the Philippines are many and varied. Although these traditions share a focus on the stick and the blade, there are often subtle differences between them, that reflect diverse regional histories, and the unique experience of their founders. Bernas Estocadas is a system of Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) developed by Grandmaster William Bernas, with roots in the informal but practical Wido (alt. Oido) Baston (stick), Olisi (longstick), Sungkod (staff), Talibong (single-edged sword) and Gunting (scissor-sword) fighting traditions of Negros Occidental he learned from his Grandfather and Uncle while growing up in Escalante, and inspiration from the systematic and structured Pekiti Tirsia (or "close quarters") Espada y Daga (sword & dagger) methods he encountered in the Navales Arnis Clinic in Bacolod. It includes training in methods of stick, blade, and empty hand self protection against an armed or unarmed opponent.

The Bernas Estocadas approach to training emphasises both martial and art, seeking to balance form, flow, and function, with freedom of movement as one of the ultimate goals. The system utilises three broad training methodologies:
-
Abesedario - Core technical drills that build bio-mechanically sound methods of wielding a weapon. This includes drills that group and then combine strikes into Consonants (12 Basic Strikes) and Vowels (4 Special Connective Striking Methods);
-
Pang-Away - Advanced solo combination striking drills, and a range of Defence and Counter (Depensa-Opensa) partner combative drills, that build upon each other, and translate rapidly into effective combat applications; and
-
Combate Heneral - Practical principle-focused and attribute enhancing play-based solo (karanza) and partner (dogsing) drills for developing combat effectiveness and self-expression with sticks, blades, and empty hands.

In this first book of a planned multi-volume series, the foundational methods of the system are addressed, including its core offensive and defensive techniques, and the footwork that makes the Bernas Estocadas system perfectly geared for handling multiple opponents. Methods are explained and demonstrated at different points in the book using either the Baston (stick), or Talíbong (sword).
